You add an online help feature to type a question into which FARR then uses for a web search. Instead of having to find all their software manually or rely on simply mirroring the Start Menu they LBC/FARR could be able to identify their programs automatically in less time than it takes to learn the basics of the program now. Now let's say somebody downloads LBC to try it out. Fortunately that suits FARR's featureset perfectly. Ideally that would mean they should be as universal as possible since the location could be wildly different from one computer to another. Other users download them and LBC could present a list of programs it recognizes based on the aliases.
You could share alias files online by simply attaching them to posts here. Here's what could really be groundbreaking in any number of ways - both for LBC and FARR. In fact just generally speaking it would be an upgrade in filesystem integration. Either using FARR directly or copying elements of its search results display could also add the ability to launch with elevated privileges. I'm assuming there's an issue with SysWOW64 redirection because if I don't include the path (ie control.exe vs %windir%\system32\control.exe) it works fine.Īt least having an option to launch with FARR would also have the advantage of allowing me to change the command for launching an item on the fly to add or edit switches. If I use one of those command lines for a LBC command node it doesn't launch on my computer. The Control Panel aliases from FARR are a perfect example. There could be variations on the current Command and Folder/FileContents nodes where the user can either enter the appropriate FARR command directly or launch FARR to create, test, or fine tune it. Ideally it would probably go something like this. Using FARR as a backend you could let users create command nodes based on searches. This might be more of a FARR feature request since interfacing with FARR is already covered by the existing plugin architecture. You've already mentioned the idea of using FARR alias files in LBC but there are a lot of things FARR does that would exponentially increase LBC's featureset and user friendliness. My only real feature request is FARR integration. It's actually just a suggestion to update the included NirCmd to the latest version which has the option to launch with elevated privileges. Actually the first one isn't really a feature request. Or, use Command+0 to manually update your index, Command+2 to update Address Book items and Command+4 to update Home folder items.Here goes with the feature requests. Via the Schedule menu, you can also set how often your index is updated. The Options tab often has settings for determining the scope of the search. Here, you can select data types from the sidebar and use the Index tab to turn items on and off. You can adjust it by going to Index > Show Index to open LaunchBar's Index window.
Spotlight indexing is largely an all-or-nothing affair, but LaunchBar initially has a smaller index. Another thing to be aware of with LaunchBar settings is the app's index. With the last of those, we recommend unchecking Switch to Calculator when typing a digit. Via LaunchBar's preferences, you can define the number of visible rows during abbreviation searches and browsing (Appearance), determine what happens when certain actions are run (Actions), and decide how you want the calculator to work (Calculator). We're going to explore some workflow scenarios with LaunchBar, but prior to experimenting with those, we recommend you check out the app's settings. LaunchBar can also automatically remove your abbreviation after a time, which can be defined via the Retype Delay slider in the General preferences. To cancel your abbreviation and type something else, press Esc. If an item doesn't appear at the top of the results list, scroll down the list and select your item with Return – LaunchBar will, after one or two launches of an item, adapt to your chosen abbreviation.
However, the abbreviations used needn't have initial characters from an item's name: although ADD should bring Address Book to the top of the results list, AB can also be used.
Once you've set this up, Ctrl+ can be used to activate LaunchBar, as well as abbreviations used to search for applications, documents and other data on your Mac.
