So nearly one year after Big Sur's initial rollout in late June 2020, I updated my MacBook air to it yesterday. There were no remaining macOS 11 Big Sur issues, problems, or complaints I was aware of that had me in a holding pattern.

That MacBook had been running macOS 10.15 Catalina for no particular reason other than laziness, as the time frame that I normally wait to update macOS to a new version was stretched far longer than usual, due really to nothing other than procrastination. I had a perfectly good working version of Audirvana 3.5.46 on my MacBook which I used to stream Qobuz right up until yesterday. My own situation is different but seemingly related.

I wish them luck and I've always felt Damien is a good guy and a great developer, but I think I'm out with v3.5 unless something additional comes to light here that re-interests me.Ĭlick to expand. It could go very wrong for sure.Īs of this writing now over one month later, there are still a ton of bugs in Studio yet to be squashed, still no Remote app compatibility (though thats said to finally be coming "next week") and a vocal contingent of angry Audirvana users posting negative things on their forum, because their trial subscription to Studio is now about to expire and Audirvana are stubbornly ignoring all requests to extend those trials until such time as a working version of Studio can actually be properly evaluated by end users. for the date, and this was a botch job, though perhaps in that famous and quintessentially French way, they don't actually give a shit what Americans might think. Add in they picked Mother's Day Sunday in the U.S. Whoever is in charge of marketing and promotion at Audirvana botched this one for sure, as mentioned, this was an unfortunate choice of format/medium to make such an announcement, and I had seen just a few days prior on the Audirvana forum an overwhelmingly negative reaction to Facebook in general, especially from those in the EU who clearly don't trust Facebook in any way on the level of privacy. On the negative side, I missed the pricing, if indeed they actually announced it, but I don't think they did as one of the questions was specific to pricing in Canada and they said they did not know for sure, so I'm guessing no official pricing yet exists though I simply wasn't able to sit through every second of it.

Their English is a million times better than my French, so I'll applaud them for their courage. I say perhaps because it just wasn't entirely clear to me, though I will certainly give credit to those guys in that English is not their primary language, it takes guts to sit there and take questions live in something other than your native tongue.

Soon enough I'm sure they will formalize it but from what I could piece together Audirvana Studio looks to be a refreshed UI, with the addition of the long requested internet radio, and a somewhat vague promise of additional sound quality improvements in the area of transparency, and bass response, with that perhaps specific or optimized for the new M1-based Macs, and also Kernel Streaming mode on Windows 10.

If not, the monthly cost of using Audirvana across my machines would not be worth it.I just sat through most of the YouTube version of this livestream, somewhat painful at times but I think I've got the gist of what's on offer.

If the new subscriber model is a personal license across my machines, that would make the pricing shown on the web site ($5.90/moth) more palatable. I have multiple Audirvana licenses to cover multiple machines that I use exclusively. Otherwise I use the Qobuz player for convenience. I only use Audirvana occasionally when listening to Qobuz with certain DACS. It's the pricing, not necessarily the subscription model that's the critical decision for developers, and their customers. So, if push comes to shove I'll ditch Audirvana. Qobuz on its own provides significant value for me. For me, I must now pay Audirvana and Qobuz nearly $20/month, altogether. The move to a subscriber model doesn't bother me. I have used Audirvana for years, with iTunes and Qobuz.
